Manila with Paulo Mangio, 2006

Manila with Paulo Mangio, 2006

His eyes showed a different light when I asked what is his favorite place in the world. He said there is nowhere else he could be more ecstatic than in Rome, Italy, particularly at the Vatican City. A religious man by nature, the architect and visionary Nestor Mangio speaks highly of Rome’s architecture, Tuscan scenery and magnificence.

He was even more alive when he cited his visit with the Pope with his family and friends. The Vatican City, he said, gives him peace and enlightenment each time he steps inside its walls.

And a man who obviously indulges himself with knowledge in art and culture, Mangio said he loves the Arena, the Coliseum, St. Peter’s Square, the 15th century altar of St. Aniceto, the monastery at the cliff of Mt. Padre Pio Petrocina where it is divine and magical at midnight.

“I am fascinated with the medieval towns. When I travel I usually appreciate the culture, architecture, food and music of the place I visit. I love al fresco dining. And I love Italian food the most. For me, Rome is incomparable,” Mangio said.

Far from his usual talks as chairman of the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC), Mangio provided insights on trends in travel and tourism. He said that the current developments in tourism are focused in ecological tourism, especially in places that are rich in natural resources like the Asia-Pacific region.

But in the next five to 10 years, Mangio said South East Asia will be at an advantage because of wellness tourism. The Philippines, he said, is one of the most viable areas for wellness tourism where retirees can easily locate and live comfortably. “Our country is better than Thailand. We have the best tropical climate and the cost of living is much affordable than in other countries. Also, our people are kind-hearted and warm with a hospitality that exudes our fine culture and values,” Mangio said.

Mangio added that with the improvement being done at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark and the existence of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, several wellness facilities can be developed in western Pampanga alone. This is not mentioning other growth areas such as Batangas, Aurora, La Union, Cebu and more.

Aside from being a CIAC chairman and a traveler, Mangio is also the president and CEO of the Central Country Estate Inc. (CCEI), developer of the world-class prime community in Mexico, Pampanga – The Lakeshore. The Lakeshore is composed of several state-of-the-art communities with a 12-hecatre manmade lake at its heart and a towering lighthouse. (Story by Mini Arceo/ Photos courtesy of Nestor Mangio)
